Several other species in the Aerococcus genus have been identified, including the pathogenic A. sanguinicola and the less-pathogenic A. christensenii and A. urinaehominus [3-5]. While rarely recognized in the past, A. urinae has become more commonly isolated in bacterial cultures, as bacterial detection has improved [ 6 ].

Both Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola have been shown to cause invasive human infections such as sepsis with a urinary tract focus and infective endocarditis (IE),,,, and both these species are also believed to cause urinary tract infections (UTI),. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are relatively newcomers and emerging organisms in clinical and microbiological practice. Both species have worldwide been associated with urinary tract infections. More rarely cases of bacteremia/septicemia and infective endocarditis have been reported. Treatment options are therefore important.

Mostly known to cause urinary tract infection, it can cause bacteremia leading to severe urosepsis and infective endocarditis.

While rarely recognized in the past, A. urinae has become more commonly isolated in bacterial cultures, as bacterial detection has improved [ 6 ]. Aerococcus urinae is a rarely reported pathogen, possibly due to difficulties in the identification of the organism.

Aerococcus sanguinicola is a Gram-positive coccus first described in 2001. Infections in humans are rare but the use of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and improved phenotypic methods has facilitated the identification of A. sanguinicola. We report here 6 cases of A. sanguinicola bacteraemia, 2 of which were associated with infective endocarditis. Most patients were elderly (median age 70 y) and had

This explains why it has historically been misdiagnosed. Aerococcus bacteriuria is known to be common amongst the elderly, with a female predominance .

In 2001 the clinically relevant species Aerococcus sanguicola, which was later renamed A. sanguinicola, was defined. Two additional aerococcal species have been identified in humans: Aerococcus christensenii [23] from the vaginal tract, which seems to be an uncommon cause of infections [24] , and Aerococcus urinaehominis [25] from urine, which has not been demonstrated to cause infection in humans.

Aerococcus sanguinicola

The disease caused by Aerococcus has been underestimated, but mass spectrometry could be a simple method for identifying this pathogen. In this study, we report 2 cases of urinary tract infection by Aerococcus sanguinicola. A descriptive clinical-microbiological study was conducted on the presence of A. sanguinicola causing urinary tract
